Everything you need to know about minocycline acne treatments:

Minocycline is an antibiotic that is primarily taken orally as a pill. It is in the tetracycline group along with doxycycline, another common antibiotic prescribed for acne. When taken properly, these medications reduce the number of acne-causing bacteria in your pores, while also minimizing the inflammation of your skin. Specifically, these medications don’t actually kill bacteria, but stop them from reproducing.

Minocycline is typically only prescribed for moderate to severe acne, and is almost always combined with benzoyl peroxide or topical retinoids.

Where to get minocycline:

In order to get a minocycline acne treatment, you must obtain a prescription from a licensed physician, like a dermatologist.

Directions for minocycline:

Make sure you follow the instructions your dermatologist gave you. The most common instructions will be to take your minocycline either once (in the morning) or twice (morning and night) every day.

Side effects of minocycline:

Lightheadedness and dizziness can occur when you begin taking minocycline. This should subside after 3-4 days. Stop taking the medication and contact your doctor if: the lightheadedness does not go away, your skin begins to darken, you experience headaches with blurred visions, or you breakout into a rash.

Sensitivity to the sun is extremely common with minocycline. While taking minocycline, be sure to apply sunscreen (at least SPF 30) every day and do not go tanning.

Allergy warning:

An allergic reaction to minocycline can be dangerous. Stop taking your medication immediately and seek emergency help if you experience any of these effects of an allergic reaction:

  • Hives
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat
